Fitted to the rear of a trailer the tail-lift moves up and down from ground to load deck and can be made from steel or aluminium. Tail-lifts can be electrically operated from the platform allowing one-man operation and fast loading/unloading. Tail-lifts can also be tucked away below the vehicle to prevent obstructing the rear doors.

Man erreicht mit diesen Tiefbetten niedrigste Ladehöhen. Gelegentlich sind diese Tiefbetten auch hydraulisch anhebbar, um auf eine ebene Ladefläche zu kommen. Im beladenen Zustand wird das Tiefbett auf niedrigstes Niveau abgesenkt.

Sind Anhänger, bei denen die Zugeinrichtung niedrigerist als bei normal gekuppelten Fahrzeugen (ca 750 – 850 mm). Gemeint sind ebenfalls Zugeinrichtungen, welche weit unter den LKW zurückspringen, bis hinter die Hinterachse, so dass in diesem Fall von tief- und gleichzeitig untergekuppelt gesprochen wird. Diese Variante dient dazu, den Abstand (750 mm) zwischen dem Aufbau des LKWs und dem Aufbau des Anhängers so eng wie möglich zu halten, weil durch die Tief-Unterkuppelung der Drehpunkt verlagert wird. Man erreicht auf diese Weise längere Ladeflächen bei Einhaltung der zulässigen Gesamt-Lastzuglänge.

Werden allgemein Kofferfahrzeuge genannt, deren Laderaum bis ca -30 Grad heruntergekühlt werden kann, zum Transport von Tiefkühlkost.

Ist die allgemeine Bezeichnung für Anhänger mit niedriger Ladehöhe, meistens jedoch sind klassische Tieflader mit Auffahrrampen zum Transport von Baugeräten gemeint.
